About me

By now you've probably realised my name is Salman...

...and yes i do get the autocorrected version of my name, Salmon, a lot, which is quite amusing to me. So amusing in fact, that I branded my whole site around this concept.

I'm pretty pleased with the short bio I wrote on the homepage, so let's copy + paste that here:

"A visual designer currently based in London.I craft across mediums to provide design solutions – whether visual, interactive, orchestrating experiences or transforming systems. I work with clients worldwide, big and small, to achieve this"

Let's take it up a notch and get to know me better:

As I am writing the copy and code of my site, I can make this 'div' section a varied and little eccentric dating profile - so let's do that:

• If I wasn’t a designer I would be…
  Involved in advertising. Having watched adverts such as BMW's Films and Sony’s Balls by Fallon, Honda’s Cog and Impossible Dream by Wieden + Kennedy, and even old recordings of British Airways’ Face by Saatchi & Saatchi I have always loved the power of advertising and how it can stir emotion in people.


• Outside of design and illustration, my hobbies are:
  Anything related to cars, consuming music, concocting different types of tea or alcohol-free drinks, finding antiques to restore, and since lockdown (and rather surprisingly given the car thing), walking


• My favourite holiday destination is:
  Istanbul, Turkey. Everyone says it’s a melting pot of various cultures – and having been there I can say “it’s a melting pot of various cultures”


• My current car is:
  
  

  
  
  I’m daily driving a 1997 BMW 840Ci, which I've named "Brunhilda the Broody Bavarian Beast". It’s so so good – if you ignore the horrific fuel consumption, the reverse-Tardis quality of it being massive outside and cramped inside, and that parts are hard to find. Makes a very nice sounds though!

• My music taste is:
  Very varied. Being a Spotify diehard I've currently created 37 playlists, each 100 songs deep, and named after the colours in the excellent book The secret lives of colour by Kassia St Clair.
  
  
  

  
  
  I’m quite a massive fan of (deep breath) Daughter, Christian Loffler, Tourist, Foals, Kanye West, Jamie XX, Young Fathers, Bonobo, Anna of the North, Four Tet, DJ Koze, Hans Johnson, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Vince Staples, Wolf Alice, Bombay Bicycle Club, O’Flynn, The Streets, Dustin O'Halloran, Kacy Hill and Sylvan Esso. Phew!


• My favourite song is:
  A dead heat between Daughter’s Home, Daft Punk’s One More Time, and Anna of the North’s Lovers


• Sports I play are:
  I spent the better part of my teens learning GoJu-Kai Karate, which proved very useful growing up! Since then, I’ve tried to play 5-a-side football once a week. I also briefly tried rugby but was like a… fish out of water


• And sports I am interested in are:
  Being from London, naturally I support Manchester United. I also like watching the NBA, curling(!) and the World Rally Championship


• My ideal 5-a-side team is:
  Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O'Neal, Steve Nash, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter for basketball.
  Peter Schmeichel, Cafu, Paul Scholes, Zinedine Zidane, Gabriel Batistuta for football.
  
  Yes, both teams won’t win anything due to being wildly imbalanced, but they will be entertaining!


• My favourite movies are:
  Apollo 13, Gattaca, Jurassic Park, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Matilda, Paddington 2


• The best book-to-movie adaption is:
  Matilda – hands down


• Something only people reading this will know about me is:
  Weirdly, I can click both my ankles on-demand but cannot click any of my fingers

How about my professional background…

• My work entails...
  For the past few years I have produced branding work, graphic design, digital marketing, editorial design, illustrations, instructional design, UI design and UX research, web design, and lately video production.


• That’s quite a bit – who have been your employers?
  I have predominantly worked with The Institute for Optimum Nutrition, and freelanced with many other clients, such as Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis, Blipshift, The Smoking Tire, a bunch of nutritional therapists, etc.


• My education has been...
  A BSc in Mechanical engineering design from Kingston University (gaining a 2:1), and a MSc in Transport and Design from Coventry University (gaining a Merit).


• Any additional learning or development?
  (Putting on my best LinkedIn voice) “I constantly try to develop and improve myself”. Examples include enrolling on the Digital Marketing Strategy at the University of Arts London, taking the intensive CELTA teaching course (where you teach English to mature, non-speakers), and having self-taught myself Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop. Currently I am doing the same with Blender, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.
