I am a visual designer that works across various mediums.
To achieve my solutions and visions I have used a variety of technologies and platforms, with my understanding and knowledge of these differing based on each situation. My HTML and JavaScript knowledge is good, and at a point where I can manipulate code to make it do what I want. What I could not do was to start from a blank document and write out code that produces a website from scratch.
As well as this, prompt-based AI tools have started to become mainstream, and it felt prudent to get a good understanding of how these work.
To help my education I decided to learn though a self-initiated design project, where I would produce a website from scratch using HTML, JavaScript and AI.
For this I needed a subject matter, and after a few days settled on Elon Musk. As a reader of automotive and technology sites I noticed Mr Musk was frequently in the news (whether it was to purchase companies, share his views, or provide meme-worthy moments).
I also noticed that a lot of his promised timelines kept slipping or, where timelines were met, promised outputs were watered down. I researched for a few weeks and noted that he had made 13 big project promises, and none had come to fruition. Sometimes this was due to Mr Musk, sometimes to internal company issues, and sometimes due to external factors outside their control.
This gave the perfect subject matter to produce a site from scratch that displayed all of these promised deadlines, and (using script) provides a dynamic timer that updates in real-time, highlighting whether these projects met their deadline or not, and by how much. The name of the site is a pun based on his name.
Learning outcomes for this project were:
For my HTML knowledge I learnt items such as gradient backgrounds, responsive layouts, character sets, and so on. For scripting I learnt how to combine multiple instructions. For AI I learnt how to provide efficient instructions, and how to iterate or manipulate upon them.
